Burcin Ece Cimrin: Transforming Global Supply Chains Through Strategic Leadership & Innovation

Burcin Ece Cimrin
Managing Director

As a country that granted women the right to vote in 1934, earlier than many Western nations, Turkey has a strong foundation for gender equality. Yet cultural expectations and structural barriers still limit women’s professional advancement. Despite women holding nearly 32 percent of managerial positions, executive and board-level representation remains a challenge. Male-dominated sectors are witnessing a shift as more women challenge stereotypes and take on critical decision-making roles.

Burçin Ece Çimrin, Managing Director of TLM Shipping, was born and raised in the fast-paced city of Istanbul, where adapting to chaos and finding quick solutions became second nature. Coming from a family of business professionals, she grew up in an environment that nurtured resilience, confidence, and an entrepreneurial mindset. Her parents, both leaders in their fields, instilled in her the belief that no challenge was insurmountable, only a matter of time and effort. Her journey of empowerment began at Kandilli High School, an all-girls institution dedicated to unlocking the potential of young women where she learned the values of independence, responsibility, and perseverance. Later, she pursued a degree in English Philology, which not only enhanced her global perspective but also deepened her understanding of feminism and the historical struggles for women's rights.

Burçin’s professional journey took shape at TLM Shipping, where she has played a pivotal role in leading international logistics and supply chain operations across multiple countries. Over the years, she has developed expertise in strategic thinking and crisis management, two essential skills in the fast-moving logistics sector. Burçin, alongside her mother, also leads a non-governmental organization that focuses on empowering unemployed women and women with disabilities through European projects.

Embarking on a distinctive exchange with The Global Women Leader magazine, Burçin divulges the intricate facets of her journey as a prominent leader in Turkey. Let's explore further.

Can you introduce TLM Shipping and describe your key roles and responsibilities as its Managing Director?

TLM Shipping was founded in 2012, initially focusing on South Korea and the Far East before expanding our logistics services worldwide. Our mission is to provide reliable, fast, and efficient logistics solutions tailored to our clients' needs. Over the years, we have grown rapidly to establish our branch offices in Iran, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Our services include ocean, rail, air, and land transportation, as well as customs clearance, warehousing, project cargo, and international house moving.

I oversee strategic leadership, business development, and operational efficiency across international markets. My role involves expanding our market presence, optimizing supply chain solutions, and ensuring seamless logistics operations. I work closely with key partners, suppliers, and clients to build strong relationships while navigating industry challenges and opportunities.

I believe that as women, we must continue to showcase our capabilities and strength, regardless of societal expectations

What are the core principles of your leadership style, and how do you approach critical decision-making as a business leader?

I believe that true leadership begins with active listening and a willingness to embrace different perspectives, whether or not I agree with them. Understanding diverse viewpoints is key to building strong relationships and making informed decisions.

I often compare business to a game of chess where progress isn’t always linear. Sometimes, you need to move sideways or even step back to assess the bigger picture before making your next move. In decision-making, especially in a high-pressure industry like logistics, staying calm is crucial. Challenges are inevitable, but I see each one as an opportunity to learn. I analyze the situation, reflect on past experiences, and focus on finding the most effective solution.

What are some of your biggest professional achievements?

The logistics industry is constantly evolving, influenced by digital transformation, economic shifts, and even global conflicts. I have had to remain flexible, and always ready to adapt to succeed. One of my biggest professional achievements has been expanding my expertise on an international level. Working across different cultures, navigating language barriers, and adapting to diverse business environments have enriched my perspective and network.

How does Turkey perform in terms of gender diversity, and what steps can be taken to enhance women's representation in leadership roles?

Turkey has made huge progress in gender diversity within the business world, but challenges remain, especially at the executive level. While more women are stepping into leadership roles, the gap in female representation at the top persists.

I believe that as women, we must continue to showcase our capabilities and strength, regardless of societal expectations. As women leaders, we have a responsibility to create opportunities for others, especially for those who believe in their potential. We can drive meaningful change and strengthen women’s presence in leadership by fostering supportive networks, advocating for equal opportunities, and challenging outdated norms.

What is your advice for aspiring women leaders?

If you dare to challenge yourself, to grow and to push beyond your limits, you will inspire others along the way. Believe in your vision, trust yourself, and never let fear hold you back. There will be moments of exhaustion and obstacles that test you, but when that happens, take a moment to look back and see how far you have already come. Then, turn forward and keep going. Your journey is yours to shape, and the world needs more strong, fearless women leading the way.
