The Global Women Leader engaged in a one on one interaction with Pascale Vonmont. Let’s hear from her.

Can you walk us through the formative years of your life? What were some of the key influences that helped shape you as a person?

My journey has taken me from studying chemistry at ETH Zurich, where I earned my PhD, to teaching, securing interdisciplinary research funding, and finally, to strategic work within foundations. During my time at ETH, I learned an important lesson, which is to think carefully before acting, as every experiment requires significant time and resources. At the same time, it's essential to think creatively, because repeating the same methods without adding value won't drive progress. Always ask yourself, "Does this make sense when you look at the results?" This perspective has guided me throughout my career.

Teaching chemistry to teenagers showed me the importance of clear and concise communication. The key is to keep things simple, and making science accessible to the next generation starts with breaking it down into digestible pieces.

In my role as a foundation manager, I learned that entrepreneurial thinking is essential, especially since foundations often operate in niche areas. While foundations might not always be the biggest players in the game, they can still make an impact by setting the right focus and fostering collaborations with other stakeholders.

Can you tell us about Gebert Rüf Stiftung, its founding principles, and its main areas of focus?

Gebert Rüf Stiftung, established in 1998 by Heinrich Gebert after the sale of his family-run company, Geberit, is Switzerland's largest private science and innovation foundation. Heinrich's vision was to transfer the concept of entrepreneurship into the not-for-profit sector, believing that innovation is key to economic and social prosperity. He was committed to the idea that entrepreneurial implementation of innovative ideas would pave the way for a sustainable future, both economically and socially.

With an annual budget of up to CHF 15 million, the foundation focuses on supporting groundbreaking technologies while fostering an entrepreneurial mindset through educational and transfer projects. Gebert Rüf Stiftung has funded over 1,400 projects, contributing CHF 270 million, which has led to CHF 8.7 billion in follow-up financing. Only 3 percent of foundations in Switzerland have such an innovation-driven purpose, highlighting the significant impact and leverage that philanthropy can have in driving innovation.

What are the main roles and responsibilities you handle as the CEO & Director of Gebert Rüf Stiftung?

As the CEO & Director of Gebert Rüf Stiftung, I oversee the foundation's day-to-day operations while assisting the board of trustees with strategic decision-making. I manage key programs such as one focused on science and entrepreneurship, one fostering entrepreneurship skills in schools and one aimed at professionalizing the Swiss foundation sector further . A significant aspect of my role also involves building connections and fostering collaborations with key partners to enhance the foundation's impact. It's a dynamic, multi-faceted role that involves balancing various responsibilities and engaging with multiple stakeholders.

How would you define your leadership style, and how do you approach decision-making in your role as a business leader?

I would describe my leadership approach as 'development-oriented', focused on creating a motivating and dynamic work culture where people can grow while still maintaining high-performance standards. At the core of this philosophy is my commitment to encouraging and challenging my team. I support their development by providing learning opportunities and constructive feedback. I also prioritize open communication and transparency, involving my team in decision-making processes to ensure alignment and clarity.

In terms of decision-making, I focus on leveraging the unique strengths of each individual rather than dwelling on weaknesses. I believe in fostering an environment where everyone’s talents complement and enhance each other. Additionally, I encourage curiosity and continuous improvement, where trying new ideas and asking questions is welcomed. Mistakes are viewed as valuable learning opportunities that help us grow and improve, rather than setbacks.

What would you consider some of the most significant accomplishments in your professional career? Additionally, what is your leadership philosophy or 'success mantra'?

One of my biggest achievements has been working with a talented, long-standing team, which I believe is fundamental to success. A standout accomplishment for me is my central role in developing and implementing the pioneering Swiss funding and investment pipeline of the Kick Foundation and Kickfund. This funding cycle has proven to generate sustainable value over time, creating a continuous impact in Switzerland’s entrepreneurial landscape.

My success mantra as a leader is simple, which is 'Empower, Inspire, and Lead by Example'. I believe in empowering my team by trusting them, giving them responsibility, and supporting their growth. I also strive to inspire others with my vision, passion, and commitment. Finally, leading by example is crucial, as I aim to demonstrate the values, work ethic, and integrity I expect from those around me.
