Gender equity has been a cause for concern for nations across the world. Affirmative action has been undertaken by global bodies and individual government to boost women’s empowerment across all aspects of life.
The island nation of Mauritius has been actively working towards improving gender equity in the country. The nation was one of the signatories of the UN Beijing Platform for Action, which aimed at boosting gender equality and women’s empowerment across the world.
Three decades down the line, Mauritius has made significant progress. Great headway has been made in terms of access to education and healthcare. Legally, the country looks at men and women as same. This evolution has empowered women of Mauritius to contribute to the country’s growth and development.
However, there still remains work to be done in terms of boosting women’s representation in the workforce, especially in leadership roles in the business sector. Women continue to be underrepresented across all ranks in the corporate world.
But there is hope that Mauritius will improve gender parity in the business world in the years to come. A significant solution to this conundrum is to highlight and celebrate women leaders who currently occupy positions of power in the Mauritian business world. The current edition of GWL magazine shines the spotlight on a few of such noteworthy women leaders.
